Position Objectives:

Assists the Senior Center Director in planning, organizing, and executing social, educational, and health programs for senior citizens. Serves as the primary Transportation Coordinator, managing all senior transportation logistics and compliance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary Functions

● Assists the Director in preparing the center for daily activities, managing large groups for special events, and overseeing nutrition programs.

● Responsible for senior van transportation, including making appointments, data collection, record keeping, and required forms as mandated by the CT State Department of Transportation.

● Ensures drivers have completed all mandatory requirements of the State related to the senior van.

● Registers members into programs, handles funds, documents information, and manages membership data entry.

● Assists the Director handling day and overnight trips.

● Assumes responsibility for the Senior Center and Director’s duties during Director’s absence.

● Assists the Director in researching, preparing, and monitoring municipal or state grants and local donations to support center programming.

● Responsible for preparing and serving food, as necessary; including menus and clean up, in accordance with the State Department of Health.

● Supervises and/or directs volunteers, including training, and assists in the coordination of part-time staff or instructors.

● Assists the Director with marketing and advertising efforts, including social media promotion, flyer design, and the dissemination of program information.

● Assists the Director with inventory control, purchasing supplies.

● Perform other reasonably related responsibilities as directed by the Senior Center Director

Additional Responsibilities

● Responsible for keeping records, spreadsheets, data, and information; and compiling statistics and reports for municipal or state review.

● Responsible to participate in inter-agency and community activities to advocate for senior needs.

● Prepares monthly class lists for senior center classes and occasionally substitutes for instructors for onsite classes.

● Participate in seminars, conferences, and in-service training to stay current on aging services.

● Does related work, as required.

Desirable Training and Experience:

Education & Experience: A Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Gerontology, Social Work, or a related field, and two years’ experience working with senior citizens OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

● Specialized Knowledge:

    ○ Thorough understanding of the physical, social, and emotional needs of mature adults and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

    ○ Must be knowledgeable in all aspects of nutritional planning, meal preparation, and large-scale food service safety.

    ○ Familiarity with department-level budgeting and statistical tracking for center attendance.

● Skills: Must possess excellent customer service, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills; able to engage with participants in a positive manner.

● Technical Proficiency: Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, and experience using social media to promote programs.

● Adaptability: Team player able to assist in a variety of situations, such as facilitating social engagement or running errands for the Center.

● Ability to lift medium weights and move and set up furniture to accommodate senior citizen programs, as required. License or Certificate

● Valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

● Must attain and maintain State-Approved Food Safety Certification.
