Ebola Outbreak in DRC and Uganda

  • The CDC is monitoring an outbreak of Bundibugyo virus (BVD), a species of Ebola virus, in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. 
  • No vaccines or specific treatments have been approved to prevent or treat BVD. Treatment consists of supportive care.
  • Ebola virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids — NOT through the air.
  • Symptoms of Ebola virus include fever; severe headache; muscle pain and weakness; vomiting and diarrhea, stomach pain; unexplained bleeding or bruising
  • To date, no Ebola cases associated with this outbreak have been reported in the United States, and the CDC states risk to the general public remains low.

Travel Restrictions

  • CDC and Department of Homeland Security have temporarily restricted entry into the U.S. for certain travelers who were recently in DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan.  U.S. citizens and nationals may still enter but will undergo enhanced public health screening.
  • CT Department of Public Health is coordinating with CDC and local health departments to monitor travelers who have recently returned from affected areas following established patient assessment protocols. 

Steps To Take If You Recently Traveled To DRC, Uganda or South Sudan:

  • If you have symptoms of Ebola or were in contact with someone infected with Ebola, seek medical attention immediately. Call ahead before visiting a healthcare facility so staff can prepare safely. 
  • Otherwise, watch your health for 21 full days for symptoms of Ebola
  • Take your temperature every day. Identify a room in your home where you could separate yourself if needed, with a dedicated private bathroom if possible.
  • If you develop symptoms, immediately separate yourself from others (self-isolate) and contact your local health department.
  • Always call ahead before going to a healthcare facility so that they can prepare for your arrival.
  • If you’re traveling out of state before the end of the 21- day period, please call Bethel Health Department at 203-794-8539.
