Open Burning Permits Are Available Now

Open Burning Permits are issued at the Fire Marshal's Office throughout the year.  Our Office is located in the North Wing of the Municipal Center.

Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applications will be put on for inspection the next day the Fire Marshal is available to do inspections.

The Fire Marshal’s Office will be issuing Burning Permits on a continuous basis throughout the year. Each permit will be good for four weeks. The fee for each Open Burning Permit is $2.00.

Per the Connecticut D.E.P. permits for open burning cover only twigs, branches and garden materials, and are not for land clearing or construction debris. Leaves may not be burned. The D.E.P. Regulations concerning Open Burning will be provided on the burning permits. The Fire Marshal or a Deputy Fire Marshal will inspect all burn piles and feeder piles prior to an open burning permit being issued. The burn pile must be no larger than 3' wide by 3' high by 5' long. Burning in a barrel is permitted. The fire must be extinguished by 5:00 p.m. A garden hose or barrel of water shall be on hand when burning.

Before burning may begin, you shall call the Bethel Fire Department Communications Operator to find out the Burning Index for the day. DO NOT USE 911, and do not call the Fire Marshal’s Office. The number to be called is 778-7415.
